  • My favourite things, day four… portraits that don’t feel like portraits.The best photographs of you shouldn’t feel like you’re performing for the camera.They should still feel like you; just on a very, very good day!A huge part of my job is knowing when to step in and when to leave things alone, finding the right light, knowing which angle will flatter you - giving just a little direction to make you feel confident, without turning the whole thing into a photoshoot.And this is where trust matters so much.You really do have to trust your photographer to read the room, understand your energy and know what is going to look beautiful before you can see it yourself. Because most people aren’t used to being photographed all day; and that’s totally ok!S&S at the Main House at Middleton Lodge were the perfect example. Beautifully dressed, completely themselves and happy to just go with it. Some moments were gently directed, some happened entirely on their own, and somewhere in between you get photographs that feel polished and editorial without ever feeling stiff.That; for me, is always the aim.To make you look incredible, yes.   • Favourite things at weddings day three… the tables before everyone sits down!There’s something about a beautifully dressed dining room in that tiny window before the doors open; every glass perfectly placed, candles lit, napkins untouched and not a single jacket thrown over the back of a chair!E&B’s day at Hotham Hall was particularly stylish. Soft greens, layers of foliage, flowers & fruit worked through the tables, those little pools of light from the lamps… contemporary without trying too hard, and completely at home against all of that incredible old-school grandeur.I always make time to photograph a room like this properly.   • A few of my favourite things at weddings, number two… the well-dressed guests!I absolutely love a well dressed wedding.Obviously the Bride & Groom get their moment, but I love seeing what everyone else wears too. The morning suits, hats, black tie, colourful dresses - the person who has been waiting months for an excuse to wear just that outfit.There’s just something about a wedding where everyone has properly made an effort; their style adds to the whole atmosphere. Somewhere like the Main House at Middleton Lodge, with everyone spilling out onto the lawn, drinks in hand, really does lend itself to that well-dressed, country estate wedding feel.From a photography point of view it’s a gift.   • Shooting on 35mm film changes the way I take a photograph.I can’t take twenty versions of the same frame and choose the best one afterwards; there’s no screen to check, no instant reassurance. I have to watch what’s happening, anticipate the moment and decide when it’s worth pressing the shutter.I love that.It makes me slow down without slowing the day down. I notice the light, a glance across a table, the way someone is standing, the second before something happens; you become totally present in what you’re photographing.Then there’s the wait… sending the rolls away and seeing the scans for the first time still feels so exciting! Film has a softness, depth and honesty that’s very difficult to replicate.
